The Noism Method, developed by Jo Kanamori, is an original form of physical training that integrates his own physical discipline with a range of practices from both Eastern and Western traditions, including Noh theatre, martial arts, yoga, and Pilates.
In this method, the practitioner lies on the floor and focuses on the pubic bone and sacrum to cultivate awareness of the body’s "horizontal axis". By directing attention simultaneously to bones and skin, as well as to the body’s interior and exterior, the practitioner generates rotation in multiple directions, producing a condition Kanamori describes as "tension = opposition".
Jo Kanamori is the artistic director of Noism Company Niigata, as well as a choreographer and dancer. At 17, he moved to Europe to study with Maurice Béjart and, at 20, made his choreographic debut while performing with Nederlands Dans Theater 2. After a decade of performing and choreographing for various European companies, he returned to Japan. In 2003, his self-produced debut performance earned the Asahi Performing Arts Award. The following year, he founded Noism—the first dance company to be resident in a public theatre in Japan.
