Drawing on Italo Calvino’s first American lesson on lightness (American Lessons: Six Memos for the Next Millennium, 1988), dance takes shape through formalised surges, passing references, and elusive, uncatchable crossings: like a dialect, like a living language, it feeds on all aspects of life to reinvent itself, intertwine, and learn itself.
This is a dance that assumes the appearance of an echo, resonating from gesture to gesture, creating itself through amorous, friendly, and at times melancholic or nostalgic themes.
Virgilio Sieni works with leading theatre institutions and art foundations around the world. He directed the Venice Biennale from 2013 to 2016 and is currently the director of the Dance Production Centre in Florence. In 2007, he founded the Academy of the Art of the Gesture to develop training programmes for people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities, based on the concept of a gesture-based community. He runs programmes in cities and regions that focus on participation, listening to the body, and regenerating local areas.
In 2013, he was appointed Chevalier de l’ordre des arts et des lettres.
